Meet This Mama: Amber

Amber, mom and certified doula, talks about fears and thoughts her clients experience after childbirth.

1. How is it being a certified doula?

I work with families to assist them with their pregnancy and postpartum. Whether it’s a first baby or fifth, I help make the birth and postpartum experience smooth.

2. How do you assist in postpartum?

I’m there to reassure, guide and answer any questions or doubts. Clients tend to want to stay in the hospital because they have support from the pediatric nurse, the lactation consultant and myself. The fear of returning home with a newborn is very common and real.

3. How do you handle postpartum moments?

By reassuring and going over their check list. Pre-delivery I offer education, what’s normal and what’s not.  I literally cover everything from newborn poop, lactation, car seat and sleep safety.

I visit them after being settled at home with new baby to ensure that everything is going as smoothly as possible.

4. What advice would you like to share today with new parents?
You learn day by day, hour by hour, even minute by minute. The moment you think you've got things "down," baby will throw you for a loop…And that's okay!

From the minute you pull out of the hospital parking lot you will become the best problem solver around. You'll be more efficient than ever before. You'll be the most patient and flexible person you know.
